Vulnerability & Professional Development

What does Professional Development mean to me…

By Jen Silvetti, JFC Workforce Branch Manager

Honestly- I didn’t know what it was until I started working at JFC.  Every other job previously was just that, a job.  I showed up on time every day and worked to the best of my ability.  Not until I joined the JFC work family did my professional and personal worlds collide so drastically.

I started almost 4 years ago in, what I thought would be, a job.  I still was showing up on time and working to the best of my ability.  Then only after one year I heard a knock at the door- it was opportunity. (I know it sounds cliché doesn’t it?)

Well, for those who know my personality, I am one to take advantage of opportunity.  This meant stepping into the role of Branch Manager in the very branch I was already working in.  Wow- can you imagine?  There I sat managing those who I called my team just the week prior. What was I getting into?  I will admit, it took some time to find my way.

My previous life of corralling preschoolers and probationers did not prepare me for this new world of Staffing and Management- wait yes it did.

I was not managing, I was coaching.  Everything I have done up until this point has shaped me in some way.  My life has created a virtual tool belt and I get to utilize it every day.  One has no idea what tool she will be called to use at a moments notice.  Since working with our Chief Enthusiasm Officer (Jimmy) and the JFC work family, I have been provided with a never ending supply of tools.

What I needed most was to be vulnerable; being afraid to make mistakes and fail.  Or as someone that I met just recently referred to them, see the opportunities in every failure.

How cool is that?

human eye tearingWith this mindset, you have nothing more to do than grow. All these years, I had no idea that being vulnerable was even “a thing” until I heard it and read more about it. I had always thought that this was a sign of weakness and a flaw I had. Since working at JFC, I have grown comfortable embracing vulnerability.  I now know that it is merely something to be conscious of and continue to work through.

Vulnerable by many means, “susceptible to physical or emotional attack or harm.” Susceptible yes- but you must have the courage to face it.

Over the last few years, I have learned how to cope, manage and coach through my vulnerabilities throughout my development.  JFC has provided such a variety of ways to do this.  I have never in any workplace felt so respected and encouraged. I feel safe enough to make mistakes and question things as long as I still have the openness to keep getting better (and receive feedback).

Also, I am no better or worse than anyone else. These skills that I have learned, and continue to learn, not only help me the 40 hours a week at work but also with my personal life. I am so excited and passionate about my growth, I love sharing it with others anytime I can.  As you can imagine, not everyone is open and vulnerable.  But I will continue to learn and share as much as I can.

Thank you to JFC for showing me how important Professional Development is!

Please share your thoughts in the comments section below as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Best Places to Work in PA 2015

JFC Staffing Companies named one of the Best Places to Work in PA for 2015. The awards program, created in 2000, is one of the first statewide programs of its kind in the country. The program is a public/private partnership between Team Pennsylvania Foundation, the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, the Pennsylvania State Council of the Society for Human Resource Management, and the Central Penn Business Journal.

“Our work family and culture mean everything to us.  Without our people there would be no company.” James M. Carchidi, CEOCentral-Penn-Business-Journal-Best-Place-to-Work-in-PA

This survey and awards program was designed to identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in Pennsylvania, who are benefiting the state’s economy and its workforce. Employers are categorized based upon the total number of employees they have in the United States, 25 to 249 employees and 250 or more employees.

Companies from across the state entered the two-part process to determine the 100 Best Places to Work in PA. The first part of this process was evaluating each nominated company’s workplace policies, practices, philosophies, systems and demographics. This part of the process was worth approximately 25% of the total evaluation. The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. This part of the process was worth approximately 75% of the total evaluation. The combined scores determined the top companies and the final ranking. Best Companies Group managed the overall registration and survey process.

JFC Staffing Companies will be recognized at the Best Places to Work in PA awards banquet on Thursday, December 3, 2015, at the Lancaster County Convention Center in Lancaster, PA. Rankings will be revealed at the ceremony. Tickets may be purchased online at www.CPBJ.com/events.

Are you looking for a JOB, or do you want a CAREER?

Did you ever go to the doctor and have them refer you to a “specialist?” They want you to have the best care possible for your healthcare, so they are telling you that someone else is going to be the expert on how to treat your condition.

They bring you in for an initial consultation, ask you to fill out a TON of forms, and ask you even more questions about your symptoms.  They set clear expectations on what is required from you and discuss the game plan on how to achieve the most positive results.

You trust them because they are an expert dedicated to your specific need. They have the right credentials and recommendations as a leading expert in their field. They genuinely care about you as a person and will do everything they can to guide you in the right direction.

“Specialist, Expert, Trust”

I’m sure I speak for most people who would consider these terms to be valuable assets to have in any major decision you make in your life, so why not put your career goals in the hands of the leading industry specialists in your field?

Trust in the person you partner with to help you in your career search. They should want to meet you face to face and dive in to what really makes you tick and the types of roles that you want to target for your next career move. You deserve a consultative approach rather than being earmarked for roles that you wouldn’t necessarily thrive in.  Just because your title seemingly corresponds with the title of the position their client has, doesn’t mean it’s an opportunity that will likely advance your career.

Specialists are typically certified professionals who know what questions to ask the hiring managers in your field. Why is the position open, what makes an employee successful in this role, how the department is structured, and negotiating salaries before your waste your time on positions that are below your salary expectations. They will identify the best companies for you and who will find value in your skill set and not just your title.

Generalists have more of a broad range of opportunities that may be better suited for candidates who also have a broad skill set and are open to many different types of positions and industries. Most of these candidates aren’t as particular with their job requirements because maybe it’s not as important to them to follow a specific career path.

A specialized recruiter will be able to consult with you in each step of your search, help you evaluate each opportunity as it relates to your core career objectives, be an advocate for you whenever possible, and form a lasting relationship whether or not they were the one to place you in your new role or if you obtained it on your own. Being proactive and partnering with a specialized recruiter before you really need them is key. They will be able to identify your ideal career move the minute it comes across their desk.

If you are open to exploring ways to advance in your career, what’s stopping you from partnering with a specialist today? Do your research and consult with the best local resource in your industry!

Life is too short not to have passion and purpose in what you do for work.

Don’t get me wrong…It is an unrealistic goal to see every single person working in the job of their dreams.  I doubt there are enough sports teams, space shuttles, or rock bands to accommodate that kind of demand.  It is however, not unrealistic for the JFC Staffing Companies provide careers where people find an exciting opportunity for growth and fun!

The purpose of our business is to serve…

Many of you will argue, “You can serve all you want but the soft stuff doesn’t make you money, and if you don’t make a profit you’ll go out of business, then you won’t be serving anyone.”

Yes, every business must make a profit to survive.  We also need air, water, and food to survive but the purpose of life is not to just breathe, drink, and eat.

At JFC the purpose of our business is to serve…both internal and external customers.

Profit is the byproduct of doing both of these well.

This magnificent work family placed an whopping 5,543 people into jobs last year.  Multiply that by members of families positively affected by the work that we do and the number is astounding.

What we do here is BIG, real BIG.

We look forward to providing even more people with jobs in 2015!!!

About the JFC Staffing Companies

Disciplined on customer commitment we work hard to gain the trust of our clients; helping them find their most valuable asset – people; while preserving their most precious commodity – time.

It all started back in 1975 out of a one room office where husband and wife Jim F Carchidi and Linda A Carchidi started JFC Personnel, a permanent placement service.  Today we have a much larger work family spread across three niche recruiting companies.  There is JFC Global with specialized recruiters who find hidden talent in the areas of Information Technology, Engineering, and Accounting/Finance.  JFC Medical who execute targeted talent search strategies for today’s healthcare practices and institutions.  JFC Temps with Staffing Managers and Recruiters who deliver talent-on-demand in the areas of Office-Professional, Skilled Labor, and light-industrial.

Imagine Being Successul Only 46% of the Time

What’s Your Cost of Turnover?

Research by Leadership IQ tracked 20,000 new hires and found that 46% of them failed within 18 months.

  • Imagine if a comparable failure rate happened on the manufacturing floor.
  • Imagine if the invoices you sent to customers were only accurate 46% of the time.
  • Imagine if the payroll checks you issued to employees were only accurate 46% of the time.

Hiring Mistakes Are Costly:

Hiring is a tough business. It takes patience, proper screening and careful analysis. It’s going to take some time to find the one who really fits the bill.

For most small businesses, it’s a natural part of the business’ evolution. At first you need generalists in most positions. You need someone to run all aspects of your Human Resources, for example. But as your business evolves and grows, so too does the spectrum of job duties in the HR Department. There comes a tipping point when you’ll often need Specialized Recruiters to locate talent with specific skills sets rather than rely on Human Resources to do all the hiring.

When you put the wrong person in a new position, and don’t react quickly enough, the new hire becomes frustrated or unhappy, or both. The work suffers and if this person manages employees, they suffer too. Once you see these signs, the writing’s on the wall.

  • According to a study by the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM), it could cost up to five times a bad hire’s annual salary.

You’re running the show, and that means you’re ultimately responsible for fixing the problem, whether that’s changing the recruiting process or the people. Sometimes it means bringing in an outside Recruiting Specialist with access to hidden talent – those not posting their resumes or applying to your online ads.

Once a Specialized Recruiter finds that right person, you’ll never second guess your decision to leverage this outside resource. Customers are happier, your current employees are happier, and more importantly…your HR Department is happier.

The status quo can be comfortable. But when inaction is hurting your business’ performance, change has to come. You need the right Specialized Recruiter to compliment your hiring. The sooner you address the problem, the sooner you can focus on other growth areas in your business.
